Corrosion Scientist (434731)

Our Houston Research Center focuses on research and innovation in geology, geophysics, reservoir engineering, production technology, drilling, and sensors development to advance the discovery and recovery of oil and gas. Located in Houston’s Energy Corridor, the center neighbors the nation’s leading petroleum engineering universities, labs, manufacturers, and service companies.

Basic Function:

Provide professional advice and assistance in the resolution of complex laboratory-related technical problems in the areas of oilfield chemistry, chemical, petroleum engineering, and conduct R&D in the area of Conformance Control.

Duties & Responsibilities:

  • Provide specialist advice and assistance in a specialized area of technology such as: Improved Oil Recovery with polymer gels, new technologies for oilfield water management, and relative permeability modifiers for water reduction
  • Undertake original investigations relating to technical problems outside the scope of available literature
  • Keep current with significant developments in the field of specialization; expected to use these in high investigative assignments when applicable
  • Make comprehensive professional reports of investigations
  • Review existing patents
  • Maintain and update working knowledge of applicable state-of- the-art laboratory instrumentation
  • Provide and manage a safe, accident-free laboratory environment; follow all company safety rules in performing job duties
  • Lead collaborative research with other R&D areas of the company, e.g., relative permeability modification, stimulation, scale, and flow through porous media studies
  • Publish in relevant journals and present in conferences
  • Perform other miscellaneous related duties as requested

Education and Experience:

  • B.S. Degree in Science/Engineering/Physics/Mathematics Discipline as appropriate for the area of expertise for the assigned jobs required, PhD in Chemistry or Petroleum Engineering is highly preferred
  • Nine (9) year’s experience in a substantive industrial, technological or laboratory area relevant to the jobs assignment
  • Candidate should be comfortable in working independently or part of a project team, frequent project presentation and travel to meetings at conferences and universities
  • Candidate should be familiar in working with corrosion experiments that use hydrogen sulfide at high concentrations
  • Candidate should be familiar with either localized corrosion in sour anaerobic environments or iron sulfide precipitation in sour anaerobic environments
  • Candidate should be familiar with electrochemistry, the physical chemistry of aqueous anaerobic solutions containing iron, methods of conducting relevant corrosion and scale tests in these environments
  • Candidate should participate in the development of innovative experiments to mitigate corrosion in sour anaerobic environments
  • Must be able to communicate and comprehend accurately, clearly and concisely in English at a level required to perform the job as outlined
  • Must possess good work habits, a strong work ethic, and be able to adhere to company work hours, policies, and standard business etiquette
