Lab Scientist (Chemist-Polymer) (870-3416)

Located in the heart of New York’s Finger Lake region, our Ithaca Research and Development center is the product development and new technology hub for Aramco Performance Materials. The center focuses on developing innovative new materials and chemistries to support the company’s product development and technology strategies.

Basic Function

The successful candidate is an integral part of our product development team who will design, synthesize and characterize innovative materials and chemistries for use in foam, CASE and related applications. The Chemist will synthesize and characterize polyols and polymers using modern polymerization and organic chemistry techniques.  Additionally, the Chemist will provide technology transfer support to scale-up new polyols and provide technical support to process development, pilot and commercial processes.

Duties & Responsibilities

  • Conceive, plan and conduct research of commercial and strategic importance to the company
  • Synthesize polyols and polymers using modern organic, organometallic and polymerization methods and techniques and characterize them using modern analytical techniques
  • Identify opportunities for using proprietary polyols in new applications
  • Use experimental design and statistical analysis to execute and analyze experiments
  • Transfer new products, formulations, processes to the process development and manufacturing teams and provide support as needed
  • Document results in the form of Quarterly Summaries, Technical Reports and identify opportunities to protect intellectual property and write invention disclosures
  • Manage external collaborations or sponsored research programs
  • Provide professional advice and assistance in different departments in the field of organic chemistry, catalysis or polymer chemistry
  • Keep current with significant developments in the field of polymer chemistry and catalysis
  • Maintain and update working knowledge of applicable state-of-the-art laboratory instrumentation and implement in the lab
  • Interact with customers/industry to understand product/ process requirements and provide necessary support
  • Lead collaborative research with other R&D areas of the company, e.g., analytical chemistry, process engineering, applications, etc. for increased intellectual property opportunities and future business advancement of APM or Saudi Aramco
  • Publish in relevant journals and present in conferences
  • Participate in all Lab Specific Activities including EHS
  • Provide and manage a safe, accident-free laboratory environment; follow all company safety rules in performing job duties
  • Perform other miscellaneous related duties as requested

Education and Experience

  • Bachelor’s degree in Science/Engineering/Physics/Mathematics Discipline as appropriate for the area of expertise for the assigned job required; Masters or PhD preferred
  • Seven (7) years of experience in a substantive industrial, technological or laboratory area relevant to the jobs assignment
  • Must have the ability to work independently and as a part of a project team
  • Must possess good presentation skills and be comfortable speaking in a public setting
  • Must have the ability and a proven track record in completion of development projects with aggressive timelines and varying degrees of complexity
  • Must be able to communicate and comprehend accurately, clearly and concisely in English at a level required to perform the job as outlined
  • Must possess good work habits, a strong work ethic, and be able to adhere to company work hours, policies, and standard business etiquette
