Research Science Specialist (377192)

Our Houston Research Center focuses on research and innovation in geology, geophysics, reservoir engineering, production technology, drilling, and sensors development to advance the discovery and recovery of oil and gas. Located in Houston’s Energy Corridor, the center neighbors the nation’s leading petroleum engineering universities, labs, manufacturers, and service companies.

Basic Function:

Provide expert chemical development and technical advice in a specialized area of research and development for oil and gas well drilling. Perform and direct chemistry intensive innovative research and development projects relevant to oil well drilling fluids, requiring original or complex analysis and solution. Provide research and development expertise through the possession of strong backgrounds in synthetic chemistry, polymer chemistry, surfactant chemistry, nanotechnology, or other physical sciences. The individual may have work experience relevant to upstream oil and gas chemical research, or they may come from another discipline, such as a materials science, rheology or tribology.

Duties & Responsibilities:

  • Identify and develop novel or improved chemistries for use in wellbore drilling fluids
  • Play an active role in the chemical and engineering focused research and development applicable to the wellbore drilling and construction process, especially drilling fluids technologies
  • Conduct research and development independently or as a team player in an interdisciplinary environment
  • Collaborate/consult with application engineers/scientists to identify gaps/opportunities
  • Play a key role in product trials, analysis of results, and recommend modification to procedures and chemical formulations
  • Prepare technical papers for publications within peer reviewed journals, conferences, professional societies, and technical groups
  • Identify and capture intellectual properties relevant to drilling technologies
  • Provide expert training as a subject matter expert and prepare in-house courses
  • Demonstrate a strong commitment to maintain high quality occupational health, safety, & working environment based on HSE rules and regulations
  • May travel to meetings and seminars in other locations located worldwide to include but may not be limited to conferences and universities
  • Perform other duties as assigned

Education and Experience:

  • M.S. Degree in a Science/Engineering Discipline required, Ph.D. preferred
  • Typically has sixteen (16) years of professional experience including at least five (5) years as a specialist with full responsibility for major technical work in area of specialization
  • Preferred candidate may have Three (3) plus years of experience in chemical research and development within the chemical, medical, defense or oil and gas industry
  • Ability to prepare highly technical reports and memoranda
  • Must be able to create and present R&D reports to management
  • Must be able to communicate and comprehend accurately, clearly and concisely in English at a level required to perform the job as outlined
  • Candidate should be comfortable working independently or as part of a team
  • Must possess good work habits, a strong work ethic, and be able to adhere to company work hours, policies, and standard business etiquette
