Materials Synthesis Scientist (324057)

Located in Houston’s Energy Corridor, the center neighbors the nation’s leading petroleum engineering universities, labs, manufacturers, and service companies.

Basic Function

The incumbent is a dedicated and talented professional who will provide materials synthesis expertise within the Drilling Technology Team at the Aramco Research Center―Houston. Perform and direct chemistry intensive research and development projects requiring original or unusual synthesis, analysis and solution. Provide research and development expertise through the possession of strong capabilities in synthetic chemistry, nanotechnology, or polymer chemistry. The individual may have work experience relevant to upstream oil and gas chemical research, or they may come from another discipline, such as materials science or the aerospace industry.

Duties & Responsibilities

  • Identify and develop novel chemistries and materials for use in the drilling of oil and gas wells
  • Play an active role in the chemical and engineering focused research and development applicable to technologies used during the wellbore drilling and construction process
  • Conduct research and development independently or as a team player
  • Play a key role in product trials, analysis of results, and recommend modification to procedures and chemical formulations
  • Prepare technical papers for publications within peer-reviewed journals, conferences, professional societies, and technical groups
  • Create novel intellectual properties relevant to drilling technologies
  • Publish within internationally recognized high impact journals
  • Provide expert training as a subject matter expert and prepare in-house courses
  • Demonstrate a strong commitment to maintain high quality occupational health, safety, & working environment based on HSE rules and regulations
  • May travel to meetings and seminars in other locations located in offices and hotels worldwide to include but may not be limited to conferences and universities
  • Perform other duties as assigned

Education and Experience

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Science/Engineering/Physics/Mathematics discipline as appropriate for the area of expertise for the assigned jobs is required. Advanced Degree relevant to the materials synthesis discipline, appropriate for the area of expertise for the assigned jobs; inorganic chemistry, organic chemistry, polymer synthesis, and nanomaterials are examples of expertise preferred. PhD is highly desired.
  • Nine (9) years’ experience in a substantive industrial, technological or academic laboratory area relevant to the job’s assignment
  • Preferred candidate may have three (3) plus years of experience in chemical research and development within the chemical, medical, defense or oil and gas industry
  • May have experience in self-assembly, surface chemistry, nanocomposites and/or stimulus-responsive materials
  • Demonstrated ability to produce results through publication in top journals
  • Must be able to create and present R&D reports and memoranda for presentation to management
  • Must be able to communicate and comprehend accurately, clearly and concisely in English at a level required to perform the job as outlined
  • Candidate should be comfortable working independently or as part of a team
  • Must possess good work habits, a strong work ethic, and be able to adhere to company work hours, policies, and standard business etiquette
