Lab Technician Specialist (327863)

Basic Function

To provide experienced lab technician support for scientists conducting chemistry-intensive research projects within the Drilling Technology Team at the Aramco Research Center―Houston. The incumbent is a dedicated and talented professional support specialist having chemical or engineering capabilities and is educated in any Science, Engineering or Chemical Technology. They have experience within support roles for research and development and posess strong laboratory capabilities in chemistry-focused disciplines, such as synthetic chemistry, geochemistry, nanotechnology, and biochemistry. The individual may have work experience relevant to upstream oil and gas research, or they may come from another discipline, such as medical research, aerospace, or the chemical industry. Individuals with engineering specialties and familiar with chemical research are also sound candidates, including the disciplines petroleum engineering, mechanical engineering, materials science, and geomechanics.

Duties & Responsibilities

  • Provide technical expertise in own area of work and experience
  • Make interpretations and correlations of basic data as required to make a complete and comprehensive analysis
  • Assist Science Specialists and Senior Scientists in reviewing and interpreting analytical data
  • Work as a team member, under general supervision of a responsible scientist, in developing procedures for obtaining technical data
  • Must carry out the assignments provided by the scientists in an acceptable and timely manner, and without modification to procedure
  • Develop procedures and methods as required for inclusion in the ASC Laboratories Standard Operation Procedures Manual
  • Perform highly complex analytical tasks requiring many steps, through planning and/or use of advanced and sophisticated equipment and instrumentation
  • Prepare comprehensive reports for discussion with his/her work director, utilizes computers frequently, to assist in data manipulation
  • Serve as a technical reference for other non-professional laboratory technicians
  • Assist in training of non-professionals, especially in area of experience
  • Consult with and advise people requiring help with specific technical problems, within limits
  • Provide on-the-job training and evaluate the training performance of less qualified employees as required by supervisor
  • Observe safety rules, take action on hazards and report these items to Unit supervisor
  • Perform other duties as assigned by supervisor

Education and Experience

  • Minimum two (2) years college or an Associate Degree in a related science or engineering major required; Bachelor degree in related science or engineering discipline preferred
  • Nine (9) years industrial research lab experience with complete familiarity of standard laboratory practices; ten (10) years of experience preferred
  • Excellent candidates with at least three (3) years of chemical technologist experience but fewer than nine (9) years of total experience will also be considered.
  • Must be able to communicate and comprehend accurately, clearly and concisely in English at a level required to perform the job as outlined
  • Should be capable of performing extensive experimental studies to evaluate physical, chemical, and mechanical properties of polymer materials
  • May have experience in the operation, maintenance, and cleaning of such equipment as consistometers, UCA, isothermal calorimeters, fluid loss testers, static gel strength analyzers and related technical services lab equipment
  • May have experience in formation damage studies with return permeameters
  • May have experience in geomechanical analysis with such triaxial load equipment as the AutoLab series offered by New England Research (AutoLab 1000, AutoLab 1500, Autolab 2000)
  • May have experience with oil field cements, drilling fluids, completion fluids, or fracturing fluids
  • Must be able to lift items weighing up to 50 pounds on a regular basis
  • Must have good interpersonal and communication skills
  • Must have proficient technical writing skills
  • Must have a valid driver license and a three (3) year clean driving record if required by the position
  • Must possess good work habits, a strong work ethic, and be able to adhere to company work hours, policies, and standard business etiquette
